Northland (Te Tai Tokerau)is regarded as the birthplace of Aoteraroa New Zealand. It is here that Kupe, a mythical Polynesian explorer is reputed to have arrived on his wooden waka (sea-going canoe) around 900AD. Here too modern Aoteraroa New Zealand was formed by the signing of New Zealand’s founding document, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi, between the Māori tribes and the British Crown, on 6 February 1840.
